Cairns Prenatal Care Options
Choosing where and how to give birth is one of the most important decisions you’ll make during pregnancy. The options in Cairns cater to a range of needs, from those seeking medical oversight to those preferring a more natural and intimate experience. As a doula based in Cairns, I’ve seen firsthand how the right birthing environment can empower mothers.

This is obviously generalised, but I think it does an excellent job of helping you match your philosophy with the care provider and birth location that reflects it.
Here’s a breakdown of the birthing options available within Cairns to help guide your decision-making process (this blog post does not include surrounding areas). Please note that the closure of Cairns Private Hospital in 2023 has not only reduced the available options but also increased demand on the public hospital.
GP-Shared Care
GP shared care during pregnancy involves a partnership between your general practitioner (GP) and either a private obstetric specialist (ask your GP for their referral list), or the OBs and midwives at Cairns Base Hospital to oversee your prenatal care. Your GP provides initial consultations, routine check-ups, and general health advice, while obstetricians and midwives manage specific aspects like ultrasounds, prenatal testing, and delivery planning. This can be a good option for high-risk pregnancies
Midwifery Group Practice (MGP)
MGP is a popular choice amongst expectant mothers in Cairns who prefer continuity of care from a dedicated midwife throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. This option provides personalised care with appointments held both in your home and at the hospital, fostering a supportive relationship between the midwife(s) and the family. Unfortunately, there are very limited spots available, so if you’re interested in this option, book yourself ASAP at 0742268760. You’re able to self-refer from the moment you test positive at home.
Being a part of the MGP program gives you the option to birth in one of their beautiful birth centres within the hospital. This option is only available to those seeking an unmedicated, physiological birth. However, you must be “low risk” according to the hospital's standards, which can be very strict.
Private Midwife
A private midwife offers highly personalised and holistic care, ensuring you feel fully supported through every stage of your pregnancy and postpartum journey. This model provides continuity of care with someone who gets to know you deeply, your preferences, and your family’s unique needs.
While private midwives in Cairns cannot attend hospital births, many women choose this option for the continuity it offers before and after birth. Private midwives also provide exceptional education, informed decision-making, and compassionate support, making them an invaluable resource for those seeking a tailored approach to care.

Homebirth Midwife
Homebirth is a beautiful option for those who want to birth in the comfort, privacy, and familiarity of their own home. It’s a fantastic choice for families who value autonomy, wish to avoid unnecessary interventions, or simply feel more at ease in their own environment.
With a private homebirth midwife, you’ll receive deeply personalised care throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period. Appointments often take place in your home, allowing for a relaxed and nurturing connection. On the day of your baby’s arrival, your midwife will support you in creating a calm, safe, and empowering atmosphere, honoring your body’s natural rhythm.
Women often find that homebirth allows them to lean fully into the birthing process without the interruptions or pressures sometimes associated with a hospital setting. This uninterrupted flow can encourage oxytocin production, which is crucial for labor progression.
Even in the rare case of a transfer, your midwife will remain a constant presence, providing reassurance and advocacy.
*Also note that homebirth midwives often provide the option of prenatal and postnatal care, even if you’re not planning a homebirth.

Birth Doula
Doulas are a powerful addition to any birthing team, offering continuous emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. While not medical professionals, doulas work alongside you to ensure you feel confident and empowered throughout your experience.
One of the unique aspects of having a doula is the flexibility they bring to your journey. Whether you’re planning a birth at home or in hospital, a doula’s role is to hold space for your preferences, helping you feel seen, heard, and respected.
For women seeking a fully autonomous birthing experience outside the system, a doula can offer unwavering support in exploring this path. Many women have found this approach deeply empowering when navigating a system that doesn’t align with their personal birthing philosophy.
If you’d like to learn more about how a doula can support you, explore my website or reach out—I’d love to chat! Other doulas in Cairns include:
Choosing the right birthing option involves careful consideration of your individual needs and preferences. Whether you opt to birth at home or in hospital, Cairns offers an array of choices to accommodate various birth plans.
